Jim had discreetly left by the morning. She’d felt safe while he was there, and her back, although painful, could move. Taking her prescribed painkillers, she tentatively ventured downstairs to find a note from him, offering more help should she need it.

Something was changing. She didn’t know whether it was her mind, her attitude, or whether it was just down to the goodwill of the people around her, but she felt different.

Clearing out all her designer clothes felt cleansing. Yes, she could have sold them, which would have taken some pressure off the finances, but the act itself felt liberating.

Thoughts back to her privileged lifestyle and being able to have everything she wanted were starting to leave a sour taste, and she was now grateful for everything. Not that she wasn’t grateful before, but now she was noticing the smaller things and coming to terms with the basic necessities of life.

A text from Sam.

‘Charlotte, we are coming to visit. Jojo and I. In fact, we are already here. Call it a surprise. Just struggling to find the house. Narrowed it down to two. The huge farmhouse on the left with the horseboxes and a menage? Or the one with the black wrought-iron gates leading up to the mansion on the hill. Either way, we didn’t want to just knock on doors. Sx.’

Charlotte replied.

‘You are a tonic. It’s neither. I’m in Holm Cottage. Right at the end of Stone Ghyll Lane. Turn left at the church, and if you end up in a forest, you’ve gone too far. Cx.’

‘Oh! Well, we’re at the church now. See you in two. Sx.’
